at the washington post before i escaped the belt way with my florida girl. government is not a new topic for me. i did not think i could have written this book if i still lived in washington. the group think is too strong and it is almost impossible to overstate the power of the conventional wisdom that the stimulus was a ludicrous failure and totally uncool to talk about it without ruling rise and making ironic comments. you totally stimulated the economy when you gave that panhandler at a dollar. even obama joked after his annual thanksgiving pardon that he saved or created four turkeys. my friends here know that i have a contrarian streak. i don't do groupthink. the guy who visited gulf after the bp spill and rode the environmental damage was being overstated, i was right. i had data. arguing that the stimulus was a new new deal was not just considered contrarian but delusional. like arguing the bp spill didn't happen. we can discuss why. a combination of relentless republican distortion, incompetent white house communication, brain dead media coverage, the unfortunate timing of the jobs bill t
candidate obama veers off from his prepared remarks and accuses the u.s. government of short-changing hurricane katrina victims in new orleans. >> what's happening down in new orleans? where's your dollar? where's your stafford act mony? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> greta: and now, former vice-presidential candidate, sarah palin, posting her response on facebook to the video. many of you have seen theuent 07 speech in which then senator obama suggested that because of racism, the federal government didn't waive the stafford act to assist new orleans after katrina. 10 days before senator obama gave this speech, the federal government did in fact waive the stafford act for new orleans. and to add insult to injury, barack obama was one of 14 senators who voted against the bill that, included the provision to give supplemental emergency assistance to new orleans of he was being dishonest and divisive, which we have seen far too often from him in the last four year
worried are you? >> i am very worried. my friends who are working for the government and contributing and supporting the military don't know what the future is for themselves. they are supporting our special operators on the very edge of battle and watching all of the conversation about defense spending cuts and they are just worried about how to protect themselves. >> brian: i see that good looking guy behind you. what have you done in the last 10 years? >> i recently retired and finished up as sergeant of the task force and special operations and i returned to afghanistan as an advisor for petraeus. >> brian: look at that picture to the right. that looks follow. go ahead. >> right behind me besides the bad mustache. we are training th new iraqi counter terrorism force. >> brian: that was you in bin laden's compound. where they did the famous going through the monkey bars and everything. this is just there. >> what you see there, remember all of the jihadi videos and they popumm out of the ground. that ring i have was made from the mine which bin laden was mining to sponsor terrorism
people that want to work. everybody in this country should succeed, not just people in government. host: president obama gave an address yesterday talking about how congress should act to keep taxes low. let's take a listen. >> 97% of small-business owners will not see their taxes go up next year. this is something everybody says they agree on. it should have gotten done months ago. republicans in congress are standing in the way. there are holding tax cuts for 98% of americans hostage until they pass tax cuts for of the richest 2%. congress needs to step up and provide every responsible homeowner a chance to save $3,000 a year on mortgage at refinancing at lower rates. i give them a plan to do that in february. it is a plan that has the support of independent nonpartisan economists. republicans will not let it come to a vote. ask them how that helps homeowners. congress needs to step up and pass my plan to create a job corps to help our returning heroes find jobs as cops, firefighters and park rangers across the country. republicans in the senate voted that plane down. ask them why som

the bitter campaign battle between president nixon and george mcgovern. suddenly on october 26th, 12 days before the election, vietnam negotiator henry kissinger made a surprise declaration, believed to cement president nixon's front-runner status. >> we believe that peace is at hand. >> reporter: it was the first so-called october surprise, a late in the game campaign event with a significant impact on the election. >> in order to win re-election for nixon in 1972, they needed to end the vietnam war, and this was sort of the definitive statement. >> the most famous october surprise was in 1980, and the surprise was what did not happen. 52 u.s. hostages held in iran were not released before the election, despite president carter's efforts. instead, they were freed as soon as ronald reagan was inaugurated, setting off democratic suspicion never proven that reagan emissaries back channeled with iran to delay freeing the hostages and deny the troubled carter campaign a huge preelection boost. >> it fed into the whole dynamic of the 1980 race in the sense that jimmy carter was a stumbling, in
. the grim reality of the last four years is a result of his all government all the time administration. he lost the policy debate. better yet more than that romney won it. after the first half-hour it was obvious where he wants our economy to go and how to get there. he clearly laid out the case for tax reform. he told america in straightforward terms how tax reform let's as grow and create jobs. he beat back the canard about raising taxes on the middle class and went on to win the debate on energy. he won on education but most important of all he presented an optimistic view of america's future. growth and prosperity. optimism. isn't that what we all want? i've been a superintendent for 30 some years at many different park service units across the united states. the only time i've ever had a break is when i was on maternity leave. i have retired from doing this one thing that i loved. now, i'm going to be able to have the time to explore something different. it's like another chapter. ♪ stuart: american airlines pulls 47 planes for inspection after a third incident involving loose seats
